Nelson Mandela International Day: July 18, 2022, marks the 104th birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela the former president of South Africa.

Every year on July 18, Mandela Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of the former President of South Africa.  The United Nations officially designated Nelson Mandela International Day or Mandela Day in November 2009. It is observed globally to honor the anti-apartheid leader's accomplishments and to carry on his legacy for a better future.

Mandela is well known for being a champion of democracy and social justice. He devoted his life to achieving social equality for all people and opposed the racial apartheid system in South Africa. Mandela received more than 250 honors for his significant work on social transformation, including the coveted Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

History Of Nelson Mandela International Day

Nelson Mandela International Day was formally established by the UN in 2009.The idea for the holiday originated with Mandela, who requested that his birthday be observed as Mandela Day. On April 27, 2009, the Nelson Mandela Foundation held a series of performances to commemorate Mandela's beliefs and pay tribute to his legacy.

Significance Of Nelson Mandela International Day

The purpose of the day is to honor Mandela's contributions to society via community service, volunteerism, and public awareness. Mandela was a strong proponent of equality and the idea that people should work together to transcend differences in race and social status. On this day, a number of concerts, art displays, and volunteer fundraising activities are held.

The Nelson Mandela prize was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 to honor individuals who are like him, have dedicated their lives to serving humanity.
