A murder case has been filed following the brutal killing of three members of a single family in the village of Koribari under Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday morning, allegedly involved a mob attack sparked by suspicions of mobile phone theft.
The victims—Ruby Akhter (53), her son Russel Mia (35), and daughter Taspiya Akhter, also known as Jonaki (29)—were reportedly beaten to death by locals. Another family member, Ruma Akhter (28), was seriously injured in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
The daughter of the deceased Ruby Akhter, Rikta Begum, filed the case late Friday night with the Bangra Bazar Police Station. The case names 38 individuals, including local Union Parishad Chairman Shimul Billal, and lists 20 to 25 others as unidentified accused.
In response to the killings, a team from the army conducted a pre-dawn operation on Saturday in the Akabpur area of Muradnagar.
Led by Captain Adil Shahriar, the operation resulted in the arrest of two suspects—Sabir Ahmed (48) and Nazim Uddin Babul (56). They were later handed over to the police following initial interrogation.
According to local sources, the deceased family had a long-standing reputation for being involved in drug-related activities, which had caused resentment in the community. Preliminary accounts suggest the killings were driven by public outrage over an alleged phone theft.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the case is under active investigation and that further arrests may follow based on findings.
