Bangladesh edge closer to AFC women’s Asian cup

Bangladesh Women’s National Football Team has taken a major step toward qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time in history, following a stunning 2-1 victory over hosts Myanmar.

Coached by Peter Butler and led by captain Afida Khandaker, the team had set off for Myanmar with a bold dream—to secure a spot in the tournament’s main stage. That dream now seems within reach.

Earlier in the qualifiers, Bangladesh demolished Bahrain 7–0, despite Bahrain being 36 places ahead in the FIFA world rankings.

The team carried that momentum into their clash against Myanmar, a side ranked 73 places above them, and delivered one of the most significant upsets in recent women‍‍`s international football.

Midfielder Rituporna Chakma emerged as the hero of the match, scoring both goals for Bangladesh with remarkable precision and composure. Her performance led the underdog side to an unexpected yet well-deserved victory.

The win places Bangladesh in a strong position in their qualifying group, with just one more positive result likely to seal their debut in the continental tournament’s final round.

Coach Butler praised the team’s grit and focus, while Captain Afida reaffirmed their goal of making history.

If Bangladesh can maintain their current form, they are on course to script a new chapter in South Asian women’s football.
