Three members of a British-Bangladeshi family, including a woman and her teenage daughter, drowned at a beach in Essex, England, on Wednesday after being caught in strong tidal currents during a family outing.
The victims were identified as Selina Rahman, 42, her 15-year-old daughter Samia Rahman, and nine-year-old Musa Ahmed, the son of Selina`s sister.
Selina was the wife of Sheikh Mansur Rahman, vice-president of the UK chapter of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal. Mansur is the son of late Sheikh Mokon Mia, a former chairman of Mollargaon Union Parishad in Sylhet`s South Surma upazila.
According to Mansur`s brother, Sheikh Mahfuzur Rahman Munna, the family had travelled to West Mersea Beach near Colchester in Essex for a day out when the tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon, local time.
Emergency services, including local police, lifeboat crews, a Coastguard helicopter and an air ambulance, launched a rescue operation after the incident. However, all three victims were later pronounced dead.
Munna said the family has not yet decided whether the bodies will be taken to Bangladesh for burial.
British media reported that the family had visited the seaside as part of a summer holiday.
According to a source familiar with the incident, a rising tide swept across the shoreline while the family was near the water. A young child was reportedly pulled into the strong current, prompting Selina and her daughter to enter the sea in an attempt to rescue the child.
Both were overwhelmed by the powerful current and drowned during the rescue attempt.
