The long-running trial over the death of Argentine football icon Diego Maradona has become almost as dramatic as the life of the football legend himself, with heated courtroom confrontations, emotional testimony and unexpected moments dominating proceedings.
The case, which began in April, centres on allegations that seven medical professionals failed to provide adequate care to Maradona in the final days of his life. Prosecutors argue that negligence by the medical team contributed to the football star`s death in November 2020.
Maradona died from heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema, a condition caused by fluid building up in the lungs, just two weeks after undergoing brain surgery.
Originally expected to conclude in August, the proceedings have stretched on after nearly 70 witness and defendant testimonies and more than 25 court hearings, with no clear timeline for a verdict.
The defendants have denied any wrongdoing, insisting Maradona died of natural causes. Throughout the trial, they have appeared in court alongside Maradona`s daughters, who have attended many of the hearings.
One of the central figures in the case is Maradona`s personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, who faces the most scrutiny because of his leading role in the footballer`s medical treatment.
Luque has actively challenged witness testimony throughout the trial, frequently asking to address the court. During one hearing, he presented medical research and audio recordings before displaying Maradona`s autopsy images to support his defence.
The footage triggered an emotional reaction from one of Maradona`s daughters, who broke down in tears, shouted at Luque and left the courtroom, forcing judges to suspend proceedings temporarily.
The courtroom has also witnessed repeated clashes between lawyers representing the two sides.
Judges have been forced to intervene on several occasions after arguments between attorneys became increasingly personal. In one exchange, lawyers traded insults over each other`s education and language skills, while another confrontation outside the courtroom reportedly escalated into a shouting match in front of police officers and journalists.
Amid the tense atmosphere, some defence lawyers attempted to lighten proceedings by bringing traditional Argentine snacks, including alfajores and Paraguayan-style cheese rolls, to share with colleagues.
Another unusual feature of the trial has been the use of a large-scale model of the house where Maradona spent his final days. Built by university students, the replica has been used repeatedly by witnesses to explain events inside the property and requires several people to move around the courtroom.
The current trial is itself a second attempt after the original proceedings collapsed last year when it emerged that one of the presiding judges had secretly participated in the production of a documentary about the high-profile case.
With hearings continuing months beyond the original schedule, the legal battle over one of football`s greatest figures remains far from reaching a conclusion.
