FIFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into the post-match confrontation involving players and coaching staff from Spain and Argentina following Sunday`s 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
In a statement, football`s world governing body said it had appointed an investigator under Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code after examining the referee`s official match report.
"Following an assessment of the match report from the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, disciplinary proceedings have been opened," FIFA said.
The organisation added that its Disciplinary Committee will determine whether any sanctions are warranted after reviewing the investigator`s findings.
The investigation comes after tensions flared immediately after Spain`s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, which secured the Spanish side the World Cup title.
Celebrations at the final whistle were interrupted by a heated confrontation involving players from both teams, as well as members of Argentina`s coaching staff.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes arguing with Spain defender Eric Garcia before allegedly striking him, triggering a mass confrontation on the pitch.
FIFA has not indicated when the investigation is expected to conclude or whether any individuals could face disciplinary action.
