FIFA President Gianni Infantino has sent a special message to Argentina and captain Lionel Messi after the team finished as runners-up in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Instead of focusing on their defeat in the final, Infantino praised Argentina’s fight, comeback, and performances throughout the tournament.

In a message posted on Instagram, Infantino wrote, “What an incredible FIFA World Cup for Argentina! Unforgettable comebacks and a fighting spirit inspired millions and gave football fans around the world moments they will never forget.”

He added, “Returning to the FIFA World Cup Final after lifting the trophy in 2022 is a testament to your lasting excellence. Thank you for helping make this @fifaworldcup so special and for competing with such passion until the end.”

Despite facing criticism during the tournament and after the final, Argentina’s positive aspects were highlighted by the FIFA president. He praised the team’s fighting mentality and consistency, showing his support for Messi and his teammates after their impressive World Cup campaign.

Infantino also sent separate messages to all four semifinalists of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, not just runners-up Argentina.

Congratulating world champions Spain, the FIFA president wrote, “Sixteen years after lifting the trophy in South Africa, Spain are FIFA World Cup champions once again. Football has a new golden chapter to celebrate, and this achievement will be remembered for generations.”

Calling on Spain to celebrate their achievement, he added, “Celebrate with your families, your supporters and your nation. You have earned your place in football history.”
