Ferran Torres became Spain’s hero on the biggest stage after scoring the decisive extra-time goal that secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.
The Barcelona forward came off the bench in the 62nd minute and delivered the title-winning moment in the 106th minute, calmly finishing from Nico Williams’ knockdown to give Spain their second World Cup trophy and their first since 2010.
After the match, Torres said the victory felt like a moment written in destiny, crediting the entire nation for the historic achievement.
“Today destiny was written. It was made for us to win,” Torres said. “The goal came from 47 million people, not just those of us who were here.”
Spain faced a major challenge against Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the final, but Torres said the team never lost belief in their style of play despite the pressure of the occasion.
“Finals are always difficult. When you have Messi on the opposing team, you do feel worried, but we trusted ourselves and showed our football,” he said.
Torres’ match-winning strike was also a personal redemption moment. The forward had struggled to find the net during the tournament and faced criticism before producing the most important goal of Spain’s campaign.
“It was a huge relief to score. I’ve been criticised throughout the tournament, but I always believed this moment would come,” Torres added.
The victory marked another historic chapter for Spain, while Torres’ late goal secured his place as one of the key figures in the country’s latest World Cup triumph.
