IU professor suspended over sexual harassment allegations

Dr. Md. Azizul Islam, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at Islamic University (IU), has been temporarily suspended following allegations of sexual harassment.

The decision was announced in an official order signed by the university‍‍`s Acting Registrar, Professor Dr. Md. Manzurul Haque, on Saturday, July 5.

According to the order, multiple students from the department accused Dr. Azizul of engaging in inappropriate behavior, including sexual harassment, indecent and unwelcome conduct, making offensive remarks in class regarding students’ attire and physical appearance, and sending objectionable messages during video calls via WhatsApp, Messenger, and Imo.

After these allegations gained attention through various national and local media outlets as well as social media, the university administration deemed the matter damaging to its reputation.

As a result, the authorities decided to suspend Dr. Azizul Islam effective from July 5. During the suspension period, he will receive subsistence allowance in accordance with university regulations.

In addition, a four-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the allegations. The committee is headed by Professor Dr. Muhammad Nazimuddin from the Department of Al-Fiqh and Law. Other members include Professor Dr. Md. Fakhrul Islam from the Department of Public Administration, Professor Dr. Khondokar Arifa Akter from the Department of Bangla, and Professor Dr. Maksuda Akter from the Department of Law. The committee has been instructed to submit a comprehensive report within 20 working days.

Sources confirmed that on July 3, students from the department submitted a written complaint to the Vice-Chancellor, outlining seven specific charges against Dr. Azizul Islam.

The complaint highlighted issues of professional misconduct, violation of ethical standards, sexual harassment, and abuse of authority.
