Militant network dismantled in Malaysia, but threats persist: Malaysian Police

Malaysian police have dismantled a militant network that was allegedly working to spread extremist ideology among Bangladeshi nationals in the country.

Authorities have arrested 36 individuals in connection with the group, and three of them have already been deported to Bangladesh.

Despite the successful operation, Malaysian law enforcement officials have cautioned that potential threats from both domestic and foreign sources remain a concern. Authorities stress the need for continued vigilance against such extremist networks.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Datuk Ahmad Ramdan Daud, Deputy Director of Special Branch-1 at Bukit Aman Police Headquarters, stated that the arrests were made during an operation that began in April.

He said the police are now focusing on identifying new and emerging threats that may arise from within Malaysia or from foreign entities.

“For now, it may be over in terms of the Bangladeshi group, but investigations are still ongoing in relation to others. Further details will be disclosed in due time,” he said, adding that such extremist operations could also involve Malaysians or individuals from other nationalities.

Ramdan also noted that social media has become a key recruitment tool for radical groups, posing a significant challenge to security agencies.

“The way Bangladeshi extremists are attempting to connect and recruit through social media platforms requires us to enhance our technological capabilities,” he explained.

He further emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that more information cannot be disclosed at this stage due to security concerns.

“Since this is still under investigation, it would not be appropriate to reveal more at this point,” he added.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and remain committed to preventing the spread of extremist ideologies in the country.
