Tensions flare again outside JaPa office in Bijoynagar

Tension resumed on Saturday outside the Jatiya Party (JaPa) office in Kakrail, Dhaka, with police maintaining a heavy presence around the area.

From the morning, over a hundred police officers were stationed near the office to monitor the situation.

Around 3:00 PM, 20–25 activists from the July Stage group held successive marches along the road in front of the JaPa office, proceeding toward Bijoynagar’s Nightingale Mor. Their banners read: “Procession against the enemies of Bangladesh’s sovereignty including the Jatiya Party.” During the march, the activists chanted slogans demanding justice for the attack on Nurul Haque Nur, calling for administrative accountability.

Police maintained heightened vigilance throughout the procession. Ramna Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, (Operations), Atikul Islam Khandakar, said, “We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure law and order.”

Meanwhile, more than a hundred Jatiya Party activists were seen stationed inside their office, but police prevented anyone from approaching the building.

The march follows clashes on Friday evening in Bijoynagar between Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) activists. Later, at around 9:30 PM, GOP supporters held a torch procession in protest. According to GOP General Secretary Rashed Khan, law enforcement used batons when party leaders attempted to hold a press briefing outside the office.

GOP president Nurul Haque Nur, who was injured during the incident, is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The attack on Nurul Haque Nur has drawn condemnation from several political parties, including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. GOP leaders and students staged protests in Dhaka University, Chattogram, and other locations across the country on Friday night.
