The BNP has served a show-cause notice on Advocate Fazlur Rahman, adviser to the party chairperson, for making what the party described as “controversial and misleading remarks” about the July–August mass uprising.
According to party sources, the central office of the BNP issued the notice on Sunday, asking Rahman to submit a written explanation within 24 hours.
The notice stated that Rahman has been repeatedly making “distasteful and misleading comments” about the historic July–August uprising, including remarks that dishonor the martyrs of the movement.
His comments, the BNP alleged, go against the party’s ideals and the spirit of the mass uprising, creating negative public reaction and harming the party’s reputation.
It further mentioned that Rahman’s remarks appeared to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the movement to restore democracy, while also hurting people’s religious sentiments.
The party pointed out that more than 1,500 people, including over 400 BNP leaders and activists, were killed in the July–August movement, with over 30,000 others severely injured.
“Your statements continue to dishonor and demean the heroic role of students and the people in that uprising,” the notice read.
Rahman was asked to explain why organizational action should not be taken against him for making such “outrageous and discipline-defying statements.”
Earlier, Fazlur Rahman stirred controversy by claiming at an event that everyone involved in the July–August movement was linked to Jamaat-Shibir.
