Protests erupted across multiple districts in Bangladesh following a baton-charge attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) president Nurul Haque and other party leaders in Dhaka’s Kakrail area. GOP supporters demonstrated in Mymensingh, Narayanganj, Kushtia, Patuakhali, and Rajshahi on Friday night.
In Mymensingh, protesters vandalised the local Jatiya Party (JaPa) office after a rally led by GOP joint general secretary Md. Ziaur Rahman. Similarly, in Rajshahi, the GOP attacked and set fire to JaPa’s district and city offices near Gonokpara.
In Narayanganj, GOP activists held a torch procession, set fire to roads, and blocked traffic temporarily, demanding justice for Nurul Haque and other leaders. Kushtia saw tyre-burning protests and rallies condemning the attack, while in Patuakhali, marches and meetings were held in Nurul Haque’s home village of Charbishash.
Police confirmed that the vandalism in Rajshahi occurred before law enforcement could intervene. Local authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify those involved.
GOP leaders across the country have demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the Kakrail attack, calling for accountability and justice.
