Gono Odhikar Parishad to Hold Protest Rally in Dhaka

Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) has announced a protest and solidarity rally in response to what it described as a “brutal attack” on its leaders and activists, including party president and former DUCSU VP Nurul Haque.

The program is scheduled for 3:00 PM today (Saturday) in front of the party’s central office at Bijoynagar in the capital.

General Secretary Rashed Khan announced the rally in a Facebook post late Friday night, stating that leaders and activists from various political parties are expected to join.

The announcement follows Friday evening’s clashes between Jatiya Party (JaPa) and GOP supporters in Kakrail, Dhaka. The incident occurred when a procession of the Parishad was passing by the JaPa office. During the confrontation, law enforcement intervened with baton charges, leaving several Parishad activists, including president Nurul Haque, injured.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement later, saying that security forces were compelled to use force to protect public safety, adding that five army personnel were injured during the incident.

Nurul Haque is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where a high-level medical board has been formed to oversee his care.

Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman, Director of DMCH, said Saturday morning that Nurul Haque had suffered head injuries and a fractured nasal bone, which caused heavy bleeding on Friday. “The bleeding has been stopped, and he has regained consciousness,” he said. “However, it is too early to declare him out of danger before 48 hours.”
