Celebrations across France turned violent following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) first-ever UEFA Champions League title, resulting in two deaths and over 500 arrests.
According to recent reports, the unrest left a 17-year-old and another individual dead amid widespread rioting.
France24 reported that French police arrested a total of 559 individuals nationwide, with 491 of those arrests made in the capital, Paris.
The French Ministry of the Interior confirmed the figures, as the country dealt with the aftermath of chaotic overnight scenes.
One of the fatalities occurred in Paris, where a man riding a scooter was struck and killed by a car just a few kilometers from the Champs-Élysées.
In a separate incident in Dax, a town in southwestern France, a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during celebrations. Authorities say the suspect in the stabbing remains at large.
PSG had planned a victory parade on the Champs-Élysées for Sunday, but celebrations on Saturday night spiraled into violence.
Police described the situation as fueled by “troublemakers” who sought confrontation, throwing fireworks and other objects at law enforcement personnel.
In addition to the fatalities, several people were injured during the unrest. Local reports say a car drove into a group of fans celebrating the PSG victory, injuring four people—two of whom are in critical condition.
Authorities have ruled out intentional harm, as the driver voluntarily turned himself in to police.
The violent aftermath has cast a shadow over PSG’s historic triumph, raising concerns about public safety during major national celebrations.
