Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War today by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar, marking the 54th Victory Day.
He laid the wreath at the altar of the memorial at around 6:56 am. After the tribute, the Chief Adviser stood in silence for a short time to show deep respect for the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.
A smartly dressed contingent from the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave a state salute during the programme. Prof Yunus later signed the visitors’ book kept at the memorial.
The event was attended by the chief justice, advisers of the interim government, the chiefs of the three armed forces, freedom fighters, diplomats, and senior civil and military officials.
The nation is observing Victory Day today with various programmes to honour the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country in 1971.
On December 16, 1971, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation through the sacrifice of three million martyrs and the suffering of about two lakh women. Alongside the government, political parties and different social, cultural and educational organisations have arranged programmes to celebrate the day across the country.
