The High Court on Monday rejected a writ petition that sought the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, whose name appeared in the National Independent Investigation Commission report on the BDR killings.
The order was passed by a High Court bench headed by Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi after the petitioner’s counsel failed to appear during the hearing.
Additional Attorney General Arshadur Rouf and Barrister Anik R Haque represented the state in court.
The writ had earlier been filed by National Lawyers Council Chairman Advocate SM Zulfikar Ali Junu, calling for the removal of the incumbent IGP following the inclusion of his name among those held responsible in the commission’s report on the BDR killings.
Before filing the petition, Advocate Junu had written to the chief adviser on December 6, urging Baharul Alam’s dismissal on the same grounds. The letter was sent by registered post.
