Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday discussed speeding up negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade, energy, infrastructure and public-private partnership projects.

The discussion took place when UAE Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdulla Ali AlHmoudi paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, both sides highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries and described their ties as a growing strategic partnership. The foreign minister conveyed appreciation for greetings sent by the UAE deputy prime minister and foreign minister.

Dr Khalilur Rahman said Bangladesh, following its “Bangladesh First” policy, is keen to take relations with the UAE to a higher level through stronger strategic and economic engagement.

He also thanked the UAE for hosting around 1.2 million Bangladeshi expatriates and requested steps to reopen labour visas and ease access to business and transit visas to boost mobility.

The two sides agreed to deepen cooperation across various sectors and strengthen people-to-people connections for mutual benefit.

Earlier, the UAE ambassador also met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, who stressed the importance of high-level exchanges and regular meetings of existing bilateral mechanisms to identify new areas of cooperation.
