In a move to conserve electricity and fuel, the government has instructed shops and shopping malls across the country to switch off decorative lighting starting Sunday.

The directive comes after consultations with business organizations, during which several guidelines aimed at reducing energy consumption were agreed upon.

A meeting on “Electricity and Energy Conservation” was held at the Power Division on Sunday with State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit in the chair.

Business representatives attending the meeting expressed their commitment to support the government’s energy-saving initiatives.

Under the new guidelines, all external decorative lighting in shopping malls and business establishments must be turned off.

Additionally, air-conditioning systems in malls and offices must be maintained at 25 degrees Celsius or higher. Business establishments have also been instructed to switch off signboard lights immediately after closing hours.

Representatives from major business organizations took part in the meeting, including the Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association, Bangladesh Retail Business Owners’ Association, Dhaka Metropolitan Shop Owners’ Association, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Presidents, general secretaries, and other officials from these organizations were present to discuss the implementation of the energy-saving measures.
