France and Italy have begun discussions with Iran aimed at ensuring the safe passage of their vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Citing three sources familiar with the matter, the report said the two European countries are exploring a possible arrangement with Tehran that would guarantee safe navigation for their ships through the strategic waterway. The discussions are still at an early and tentative stage, it added.

The diplomatic effort comes as European nations seek to revive oil and gas shipments from the Middle East amid rising regional tensions.

Al Jazeera said it was unable to independently verify the report.

Separately, Reuters reported that France is also working to build a wider international coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz once the security situation stabilises.

Two French officials told Reuters that Paris has been consulting with European, Asian and Gulf Arab partners about a potential plan to deploy warships to escort oil tankers through the narrow maritime corridor.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global energy supplies. Data from the Germany-based CESifo Research Network shows that in 2024 around 6.2 percent of crude oil and 8.7 percent of liquefied natural gas imported by non-EU countries passed through the waterway.
