The government has appointed Md. Ali Hossain Fakir as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Baharul Alam, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday.
Prior to his promotion, Fakir was serving as Additional Inspector General of Police and Chief of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn). In August 2025, he was elevated from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to the rank of supernumerary additional IGP by the interim government.
Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, a member of the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) cadre, hails from Bagerhat District. He has held several key positions within the police department, earning recognition for his professional competence and leadership.
The official notification confirmed that his promotion takes effect immediately.
