5.4 magnitude earthquake felt across Bangladesh

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was felt on Friday afternoon in the capital and several other parts of the country. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the epicenter of the earthquake was in Satkhira.

The tremor was felt at 1:54pm and lasted for several seconds. Farzana Sultana, a meteorologist at the department’s earthquake monitoring center, said the tremor measured 5.4 on the Richter scale. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 5.3 at the epicenter.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department noted that the quake occurred at 01:52pm (07:52:29 UTC) near Assasuni Upazila of Satkhira. Tremors were felt in different parts of the country, including Dhaka and surrounding areas. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

This latest tremor comes a day after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar was felt in Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh on Tuesday night (25 February). That quake occurred at 10:51pm, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department‍‍`s earthquake monitoring centre.

Earlier, on 19 February, a mild 4.1 magnitude earthquake was felt in Sylhet and its surrounding areas at 12:46pm. Officials at the Meteorological Department said the epicenter of that tremor was in Chatak Upazila of Sunamganj district.
