Sylhet and Moulvibazar experienced two mild earthquakes late Wednesday night, occurring within a span of five minutes. The Meteorological Department’s (BMD) Earthquake Monitoring Centre confirmed the incident, stating that both quakes were of low magnitude. According to Rubaiyat Kabir, acting officer of the monitoring centre, such minor tremors are common in the region—often occurring monthly—and there is no reason for concern.
Sources from the monitoring centre reported that the first earthquake struck at 2:50:31 AM, with its epicenter in Beanibazar, Sylhet. It measured 3.5 on the Richter scale. The second tremor followed at 2:55:14 AM, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located in Barlekha, Moulvibazar.
Earlier, on November 21 (Friday) and the following Saturday, Dhaka and surrounding areas experienced four earthquakes within roughly 31 hours. The most significant one hit on Friday morning, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter 25 kilometers from Dhaka in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi at a depth of 10 kilometers. That earthquake resulted in 10 deaths and over 600 injuries.
