In a bid to ensure security during Ramadan, the detective branch of police has arrested 27 members of an organised mugging gang along with locally-made weapons raiding parts of the capital, reports The Dailt Star.
Detectives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna and Lalbagh divisions) conducted drives in Hazaribagh, Chawkbazar, Lalbagh, Kamrangirchar and Shahbagh areas between April 6 and 8, Joint Commissioner (South) of the Detective Branch of Police Md Mahbub Alam told a press conference today.
They were arrested while preparing for mugging and sent to court, the joint commissioner said.
During the primary interrogation, the arrestees said they worked in a gang and targeted people at bus stops in Dhaka city, made them unconscious and loot cash and valuables, said the police official.
After interrogating the accused and checking police records, 20 of them have been booked in multiple cases including theft, robbery, attempted robbery and drugs, he added.
