Since August 4, 2024, Bangladesh has experienced a disturbing wave of vandalism and attacks on 40 shrines, including Sufi graveyards and dargahs, across the country.
According to reports from Bangladesh Police, there have been 44 incidents involving destruction of shrine properties, looting, setting fires, and even assaults on devotees.
The highest number of attacks has been reported in Dhaka Division, where 17 incidents took place.
In Chattogram Division, 10 incidents were reported, while Mymensingh Division saw seven attacks.
One shrine in Sherpur District under Mymensingh was targeted four times.
To address these alarming incidents, police have taken legal actions in every case.
So far, 15 regular cases and 29 General Diaries (GDs) have been filed based on complaints from affected individuals or on police initiative.
A total of 23 suspects have been arrested in connection with these attacks, and charge sheets have been submitted to the court in two of the regular cases.
Investigations are still ongoing in 13 other regular cases and the 29 GDs.
In response, the police have ramped up efforts to safeguard shrines nationwide and are encouraging anyone affected to file complaints.
Local authorities are also holding peace meetings between conflicting groups, while community policing initiatives are underway to engage religious leaders and the general public in promoting harmony.
The Interim Government has emphasized its "zero-tolerance" policy toward attacks on shrines.
All police units have been ordered to thoroughly investigate each case and bring those responsible to justice.
The government has assured the public that it is prioritizing the safety and security of shrines and religious establishments across the country.
