A young technician was killed and another injured in an explosion caused by a tyre while carrying out maintenance work on a boarding bridge at Sylhet Osmani International Airport.
The deceased, identified as Rumman Ahmed, aged twenty-two, was a resident of Tilapara village under Airport Police Station in Sylhet. The injured technician, Enamul Haque, is twenty-five years old. Both were working for a private engineering firm named Sunrise.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, July thirty-first, during routine maintenance of the boarding bridge—used to facilitate passenger boarding onto aircraft. According to airport sources, the explosion took place when one of the tyres was being removed. As it detached, it forcefully struck both technicians and then exploded.
Both Rumman and Enamul were immediately taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Rumman succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission, while Enamul continues to receive treatment.
Airport Director Hafiz Ahmed confirmed the incident, stating that the maintenance was part of routine operations being conducted by a contracted company. “It was a regular task. Suddenly, the accident happened, and two people were injured. I have heard one of them has passed away,” he said.
Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station Syed Anisur Rahman also confirmed the death. He added that there was no damage to any aircraft or airport infrastructure. “The injured were rushed to the hospital immediately. Rumman’s condition was critical, and doctors declared him dead after admission,” he said.
