A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor SK Sur Chowdhury to three years in prison in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over his failure to submit a wealth statement within the stipulated timeframe.
Dhaka Second Special Judge Ayesha Nasrin delivered the verdict, ACC Public Prosecutor Tariqul Islam Tarik said.
SK Sur was arrested from the capital`s Segunbagicha area on January 24, 2025, and has remained in custody since then.
According to the prosecution, the ACC had served him with a notice directing him to submit a wealth statement detailing his movable and immovable assets, liabilities, sources of income and properties held in his own name or in the names of his dependants.
The prosecution said he failed to submit the required statement within the prescribed 21 working days.
Following the expiry of the deadline, ACC Deputy Director Nazmul Hossain filed a case on December 23, 2024, against SK Sur, his wife Suparna Sur Chowdhury and their daughter Nandita Sur Chowdhury.
The investigation later led to a charge sheet submitted by ACC Deputy Director Md Ahsan Uddin on August 25 last year.
The court framed charges against SK Sur on November 6 last year and, during the trial, recorded the testimony of seven prosecution witnesses before delivering its verdict.
