A court in Dhaka has rejected bail for Bidisha Hossain, former wife of late president Hussain Muhammad Ershad, in a case over Tk 75 lakh allegedly taken for a flat that was never handed over to the buyer.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir rejected the bail petition after Bidisha’s lawyer sought her release on the condition that she file an appeal against her conviction.
Bidisha was arrested from a restaurant in Gulshan-2 on August 25. The following day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Zunaid sent her to jail in line with a conviction warrant.
On May 20, 2026, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam sentenced Bidisha to two years in prison and fined her Tk 10,000 in the case.
The case stems from a 2001 agreement between Bidisha and businessman AKM Mosharraf Hossain Shikdar for the sale of Flat No. 2/B at President Park Complex in Baridhara for Tk 80 lakh.
According to the case documents, Shikdar paid Tk 75 lakh through a pay order before the flat was registered. Bidisha was supposed to complete the registration and hand over the flat by July 10, 2002, but did not do so.
The dispute continued for several years. After about four to five years of delays, Bidisha reportedly agreed to return the money and issued a cheque to Shikdar. The cheque was dishonoured several times when he attempted to cash it.
Shikdar later filed the case in 2008, alleging that Bidisha also threatened him when he demanded the return of the sale deed.
