President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned. As the presidential position has become vacant, National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has assumed responsibility as the country’s acting president in accordance with the Constitution.
The Speaker announced this at an emergency press conference held at the oath-taking room of the National Parliament at around 5:30 pm today (Friday).
At the press conference, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said that President Mohammed Shahabuddin had submitted his resignation letter and that it had been accepted. According to the Constitution, I have assumed the duties of the president, he said.
He further said that on the day he took the oath as Speaker, he had also taken the oath as acting president, if such a situation arose.
The Speaker added that, in the same way, the Deputy Speaker also takes the oath of Speaker during the oath-taking process.
Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament Kaiser Kamal, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Talukder, and officials from the Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
