President Shahabuddin resigns

President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned.

On Friday afternoon, he submitted his resignation letter to Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. Under the Constitution, the resignation takes effect immediately upon the President‍‍`s signing of the resignation letter.

Following Shahabuddin‍‍`s resignation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will serve as Acting President until a new President is elected. The Constitution requires that a new President be elected within 90 days of the vacancy.

Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as Bangladesh‍‍`s 22nd President on April 24, 2023. Calls for his resignation had intensified following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.

Under Bangladesh‍‍`s Constitution, the President serves a five-year term from the date of assuming office. Accordingly, Shahabuddin‍‍`s term was due to run until 2028. The same individual may serve a maximum of two terms as President. The presidency is the highest constitutional office in Bangladesh.
