Three held over alleged gang rape in Shariatpur

A woman was allegedly gang-raped in Shariatpur‍‍`s Naria upazila after her husband was tied up by a group of assailants in an orchard, police said on Tuesday. 

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The alleged assault took place on Monday night in Achura village. 

The arrested men were identified as Md Rabbi, 28, Emon Khandaker, 26, both from Achura village, and Ali Khandaker, 42, of Atipara village in Shariatpur Sadar upazila.

According to police, one of the accused, Hazrat Ali, called the woman‍‍`s husband to an orchard in the village at around 9:30pm. 

When he arrived, he was allegedly overpowered by a group of seven men, tied up and forced to call his wife, asking her to come to the orchard with money.

Police said that after the woman reached the spot, the group allegedly raped her.

The attackers fled after local residents approached the orchard upon learning about the incident, leaving the couple behind, police said.

Officers rushed to the scene after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999 and rescued the couple. The woman was later taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for a medical examination.

Police launched an overnight operation and arrested the three suspects in the early hours of Tuesday. 

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
