The Bangladesh Army has formed a court of inquiry to investigate the alleged political involvement of an unnamed officer based on intel received from a law-enforcing agency.
The officer is in the Army`s custody after he was apprehended from his residence in Dhaka`s Uttara on Jul 17, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said in a statement on Friday. The officer’s name and rank were not disclosed.
Noting that the Army was treating the matter with "utmost seriousness", the ISPR said a preliminary investigation found evidence substantiating the allegations.
“Based on the findings of the full investigation, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the officer in accordance with military laws and regulations.”
The ISPR said the Army is coordinating with the police and other law-enforcing agencies. It added that a separate inquiry has been launched over the officer’s unauthorised absence from his place of duty.
“Following the investigation, legal action will be taken based on the court’s recommendations and command responsibility under military law."
The ISPR stressed that the Army is a non-political, disciplined, and professional institution, and there is no room for political involvement within its ranks.
“Any member of the Armed Forces found engaged in political activities will face appropriate action under military law. The Bangladesh Army remains fully committed to upholding professionalism, discipline, and constitutional responsibility among all its members.”
