A new study has found that more than half of Bangladesh`s young people want to leave the country to study or find better jobs.
The research, conducted by the British Council as part of its Next Generation Bangladesh project, shows that 55% of young people aged 18 to 35 are planning to move abroad.
The study surveyed over 3,000 young people from different backgrounds.
The main reasons they want to leave are to get a better education and find job opportunities.
The countries they are most interested in are Saudi Arabia, Canada, and Australia.
Many young people feel that these countries offer better chances for their future.
The survey also shows that many young people are worried about the future of Bangladesh.
Fewer and fewer of them feel proud of their country or hopeful about its future.
Around 42% of the young people said they are worried about unemployment.
Most of them (69%) have only finished school up to grades 7 to 10, and many feel that there are not enough opportunities for education, training, or work.
As a result, 32% of young people said they have turned to crime because of limited opportunities.
Many young people are also looking for jobs in the informal sector, as there aren’t enough formal jobs available in Bangladesh.
Of those who want to move abroad, 27% are interested in going to Saudi Arabia, 18% to Canada, and 13% to Australia.
Other countries are less popular, with only 1-2% of young people choosing them.
The survey also found that those who feel they lack skills or education are more likely to choose Saudi Arabia, while those who want higher education prefer Canada or Australia.
The study highlights the growing frustration and concerns among young Bangladeshis about their future and the challenges they face in their home country.
