The 12th International Day of Yoga was celebrated in Dhaka on Sunday, with hundreds of yoga practitioners, students, and wellness enthusiasts participating, highlighting the growing popularity of yoga in Bangladesh.

The event was organised by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) under the High Commission of India at Bashundhara Sports City, bringing together representatives from various yoga institutions, health organisations and community groups.

This year‍‍`s International Day of Yoga was observed under the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing", focusing on the role of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and a healthier lifestyle across different age groups.

A major attraction of the programme was a Common Yoga Protocol session led by IGCC yoga instructor Shahanaz Parvin and her students. Participants performed a series of yoga postures, breathing techniques and wellness exercises designed for practitioners of different skill levels.

The celebration also featured demonstrations by several leading yoga organisations in Bangladesh, reflecting the expanding interest in yoga and holistic wellness practices throughout the country.

Visitors had the opportunity to explore an Ayurveda Lounge, where various organisations showcased traditional Ayurvedic health and wellness products. Information on Ayurveda and related literature was also made available to attendees.

The main event concluded a month-long series of activities organised ahead of International Day of Yoga 2026. Following a curtain-raiser programme in May, IGCC collaborated with educational institutions, media organisations and yoga groups to conduct more than 36 awareness and outreach events across Bangladesh.

Organisers said the initiatives were aimed at encouraging wider public participation and promoting the benefits of yoga for both physical and mental health.

Representatives from several corporate and institutional partners also attended the programme, contributing to the successful organisation of the event.

Observed every year on June 21, the International Day of Yoga celebrates the ancient Indian practice that has gained global recognition as a tool for improving health, reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being.
