Brazil defender Danilo has admitted the team`s opening performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup fell short of expectations, but insists the five-time champions have the quality to bounce back in the coming matches.
The experienced full-back spoke ahead of Brazil`s Group C clash against Haiti, acknowledging that the team`s 1-1 draw with Morocco exposed both tactical and mental shortcomings.
Brazil entered the tournament as one of the favourites but struggled to impose themselves against Morocco in their opening match. Danilo said the result was difficult to accept given the high expectations surrounding the Seleção.
According to the Flamengo defender, Brazil lacked balance during the match and must improve quickly if they are to challenge for the title.
The 34-year-old also admitted that teams such as Argentina and France currently appear more settled and mature. However, he stressed that Brazil remain capable of competing with the world`s best and making a deep run in the tournament.
Despite facing Haiti next, Danilo warned against underestimating any opponent. He pointed to several surprise results in the opening round, including Cape Verde`s impressive draw against Spain, as evidence that no match can be taken lightly at this World Cup.
The Brazilian defender said talk of an easy victory would be misplaced, adding that every team in the competition has shown the ability to compete.
Danilo also expressed hope that Neymar will soon return to action after recovering from a calf injury that has sidelined him since May. The Brazil star recently rejoined training and was welcomed back by teammates at the team`s World Cup camp.
The defender believes Neymar`s presence alone can change the dynamic of a match, saying opponents often alter their plans when facing the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward.
Brazil will be looking for their first win of the tournament when they face Haiti on Friday as they aim to strengthen their position in Group C and regain momentum in their World Cup campaign.
