After 36 years, Scotland have finally secured victory in a FIFA World Cup match. In the match held early this morning Bangladesh time on Sunday, they defeated Haiti 1–0, thanks to a solitary goal from John McGinn.
Returning to the World Cup after 28 years, Scotland had last won a match in 1990, when they beat Sweden 2–1. In the 1998 World Cup, they exited at the group stage without winning a single match. After a long wait, they have now secured another victory.
Scotland took the lead in the first half. McGinn scored in the 28th minute, becoming the first Scotland player in 28 years to score in a World Cup match.
After conceding, Haiti tightened their defence. They tried to push forward in the second half, but could not break through Scotland’s organised backline led by Isidor and Piero. The match ended 1–0.
With this win, Scotland moved to the top of Group C. In the other match of the group, Brazil and Morocco drew 1–1, placing them second and third respectively, while Haiti sit bottom with zero points.
In the next round of group-stage matches, Scotland will face Morocco, while Brazil will take on Haiti.
