Prominent economist Professor Anu Mohammad expressed his concern on Sunday, March 23, that discrimination continues to persist in the country, despite ongoing claims of equality.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Bangladesh Tree Protection Movement in the capital, Anu Mohammad described the continuation of illegal and unacceptable projects from the previous government as deeply disappointing.

"It is shameful that, even after 53 years of independence, we still have to fight to protect fields and parks," he remarked.

The press conference was held on the 100th day of a sit-in protest, which is demanding the cancellation of the controversial elevated expressway flyover project from the Film Development Corporation (FDC) to Palashi.

The project threatens to destroy Panthakunja Park and the Hatirjheel water reservoir, which have long been valued by the community.

Other speakers at the event shared similar concerns, pointing out that the government had initiated the costly and illogical elevated expressway project to benefit a small group of people, ignoring the broader needs of the city‍‍`s residents.

They also criticized the current government for failing to take any meaningful action against this project.

At the press conference, a 9-point demand was also presented, urging the state to move away from excessively expensive, foreign debt-dependent projects and focus on more sustainable initiatives.
