Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser to Bangladesh`s interim government, introduced Mahfuz Alam, his special assistant, as the "mastermind" behind the recent student-led movement aimed at toppling the Awami League regime, during an event in New York, USA on Tuesday.
The Nobel laureate made these remarks while addressing the Clinton Global Initiative, held alongside the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
Speaking alongside former US president Bill Clinton, Yunus recounted the previous government`s violent crackdown on student protesters and praised the students` bravery in facing live ammunition.
Yunus then introduced three companions accompanying him on the visit, including Mahfuz, as representatives of the movement for a new Bangladesh.
Lauding Mahfuz`s leadership, Yunus described him as the "brain behind the revolution," though Mahfuz humbly emphasized the collective nature of the movement.
Yunus highlighted the movement’s well-organized and disciplined nature, noting its lack of a single identifiable leader made it more resilient against government suppression.
He expressed admiration for Mahfuz`s courage and dedication, suggesting that young people around the world could draw inspiration from his example.
Yunus urged the audience to support these young leaders in achieving their vision for a new Bangladesh and called for prayers for their success.
The speech concluded with applause from the audience, including Bill Clinton.
