Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been acquitted of charges related to extortion and tax evasion.
On Wednesday, November 27, a court ruled to dismiss the tax evasion case against Tarique Rahman, in which he was accused of evading 26 lakh taka in taxes. The ruling was given by Special Judge Md. Rezaul Karim.
In a separate case related to extortion, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Judge Channauallah cleared Tarique Rahman and seven others. They were accused of extorting over 10 crore taka in the case, which dates back to 2007.
Both of these cases had been filed years ago, with the extortion charge coming in 2007 and the tax evasion case in 2008. The court found insufficient evidence to continue the cases, leading to the acquittals.
