Domestic workers urged to use legal rights and services

A meeting was held on Monday, November 25, to discuss the rights and better treatment of domestic workers, as well as how they can access more benefits in the service sector.

The event took place at the Caritas Bangladesh Hall in Malibagh, Dhaka, organized by the Suneeti Project of the Distressed Health Centre (DSK).

The session was led by Ummey Hami, the Project Officer for the Suneeti Project.

Among the guest speakers were Raisul Islam from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Sub-Inspector Kamal from Khilgaon Police Station, and journalist Yusuf Dipu.

Members of the Domestic Workers Forum, including Kulsum, Janu Begum, Sharmin, Howa, and Shefali, also shared their thoughts during the discussion.

Ummey Hami explained the purpose of the meeting and showed several awareness videos aimed at educating the workers about their rights.

Raisul Islam, from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, discussed the various government services available to domestic workers, including birth registration, women‍‍`s protection services, and child safety.

He also talked about how workers can easily access these services online or by using help lines.

The session included a discussion about the challenges workers face when trying to access benefits like old-age pensions, widow allowances, and maternity support.

Raisul Islam provided information on how to overcome these difficulties and get the support they need.

Police officer Kamal encouraged workers to file clear and proper complaints at police stations for better chances of action.

He also reminded them to use the national emergency service number 999 if they ever face injustice or emergencies.

Several domestic workers also spoke at the meeting, sharing their experiences and suggestions for improvement.

The gathering aimed to raise awareness about the importance of treating domestic workers with dignity and ensuring they have access to the rights and services they deserve.
