The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has issued warnings that low-lying areas in 12 districts, including Dhaka, Manikganj, Shariatpur, and Madaripur, could face flooding due to increased rainfall.

Among the districts, low-lying areas near rivers in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram are expected to be inundated. Temporary flooding is also forecasted for river-adjacent areas in Rajbari, Faridpur, Pabna, Manikganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Munshiganj, and Dhaka.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the FFWC reported that the water level of the Teesta River at Dalia point is 5 centimeters above the danger mark.

The Centre also noted the formation of a low-pressure system over the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal and surrounding regions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has occurred over the past 24 hours in the Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions and upstream areas in Assam and West Bengal, India.

From Wednesday morning until Thursday morning, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions, as well as in upstream regions of West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh in India.

The FFWC also reported rising water levels over the past 24 hours in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers in Rangpur division. Water levels are expected to rise further in the next 24 hours, with the Teesta River possibly exceeding the danger level, while the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers could cross the danger mark. Low-lying areas along these rivers in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram may be flooded, though water levels are expected to decrease over the next two to three days.

Meanwhile, water levels in the Ganga and Padma rivers have also risen in the past 24 hours. The Ganga is expected to remain stable over the next two days, with a gradual decrease over the following three days. In contrast, the Padma River is likely to see rising water levels over the next three days, potentially reaching the alert mark. Temporary flooding is possible in low-lying river-adjacent areas of Rajbari, Faridpur, Pabna, Manikganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Munshiganj, and Dhaka.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system has also experienced rising water levels in the past 24 hours. Levels may continue to rise over the next three days, possibly reaching alert levels, before stabilizing in the following two days.

In the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, water levels in the Mahananda, Kartoa, Jamuneshwari, Punarbhaba, and Ghaghat rivers have increased over the last 24 hours, while levels in the Upper Atrai and Tangon rivers have decreased. The FFWC expects water levels in these rivers to rise in the coming three days, with the Atrai River possibly exceeding the danger mark.

In the Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, water levels in the Someshwari, Bhugai, and Kangs rivers have increased, while levels in the Sarigoin, Jadukata, Lubachra, and Jhalukhali rivers have decreased. The Monu, Dhalai, Khowai, and Jinjiram rivers remain stable, with slight increases possible over the next 24 hours and decreases over the subsequent two days. The Someshwari, Bhugai, and Kangs rivers may reach alert levels in the next 24 hours.

Finally, coastal rivers in Barisal, Khulna, and Chattogram divisions are experiencing higher-than-normal tides, which are expected to continue over the next three days.
