A journalist was brutally hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Gazipur on Thursday night, just hours after he went live on Facebook to expose extortion in the city’s Chandna Chowrasta area. The incident took place around 8:30 PM.
The victim, Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin, 38, was a staff reporter for Dainik Protidiner Kagoj. He lived in the Chandna Chowrasta area of Gazipur city and hailed from Vhatipara village in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh. A disturbing video of the attack has since gone viral on social media.
According to police officials, a group of five to six attackers, armed with sharp weapons, ambushed Tuhin near Chandna Chowrasta.
In an attempt to escape, he ran into a nearby tea stall in the Eidgah Market area. However, the attackers followed him inside and struck him repeatedly with machetes until he died. The assailants fled immediately after the killing.
Earlier in the day, Tuhin had gone live on Facebook highlighting illegal toll collection from footpaths and roadside shops in the area.
Later in the evening, he shared a video clip showing unsafe road-crossing practices and posted a photo of a damaged road near the Joydebpur railway gate, criticizing the authorities for neglect and lack of maintenance.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Md Robiul Hasan said, “We have collected some video footage and initial clues.
The killing of a journalist in this manner is extremely tragic. We have launched an operation to arrest those responsible.”
Basan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Khan stated that the body was recovered and sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for postmortem. Investigations are ongoing.
