In a tragic incident at Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Molla College, three students were killed, and more than 100 students and teachers were injured in violent clashes on campus.
According to college authorities, the deadly confrontation occurred between students from Molla College and those from Kabi Nazrul and Sohrawardy Colleges.
However, the college has not disclosed the names of the victims or confirmed if their bodies are in the college or at a hospital.
The college issued a statement on Monday afternoon, signed by Managing Director Ashraf Samir, informing the media about the tragic incident.
The statement confirmed the deaths and reported that many of the injured were in critical condition, with some undergoing intensive care.
In the release, the college expressed deep shock and anger over the violence, stating,
"Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Molla College deeply mourns and expresses anger over a brutal attack that took place today on our campus. A group of outsiders, posing as students of the so-called Seven Colleges under a student banner, entered the college and caused widespread destruction. In this attack, three students were brutally killed, and over a hundred students and teachers were injured. Many of the injured are in critical condition and some are receiving intensive care."
The statement also accused some students from Shaheed Sohrawardy College and National Medical College of being involved in the violence, claiming they were backed by the banned organization Chhatra League.
"Some students from Shaheed Sohrawardy College and National Medical College, allegedly with the support of the banned organization Chhatra League, were involved in the conspiracy to destabilize the institution. Most of the attackers were not students, but rather individuals involved in terrorist activities."
The college added that the attackers had looted documents, college assets, and students’ personal belongings, causing extensive damage to the college building.
The press release mentioned,
"The attackers looted important documents, college assets, and students` personal belongings. They also caused extensive damage to the college building, breaking into the principal`s office and various other rooms."
Despite repeated calls for assistance from local and higher authorities, the college expressed frustration that no effective action had been taken. The statement said,
"Despite repeated requests for help from both local and higher authorities, no effective action had been taken so far. This has led to a dangerous situation, with the safety of students and the educational environment at risk."
In light of the violence, the college made three important demands.
They called on the authorities, law enforcement, and the Ministry of Education to immediately identify and arrest those responsible for the violence and provide them with a fair trial.
The college also asked for stronger security measures to be put in place to protect students, as well as swift action to recover stolen property and restore damaged documents.
The college’s release concluded with a call for unity, saying,
"We urge all teachers, students, and parents to remain patient and united in the face of this horrific incident. We are working to restore the educational environment and are hopeful that the relevant authorities will take swift and effective action."
