A.M.M. Nasir Uddin, a retired government secretary, has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh.
The Cabinet Division made the official announcement on Thursday.
Along with Nasir Uddin, four other new commissioners have also been appointed to the Election Commission.
The newly appointed commissioners include former Additional Secretary Md. Anwarul Islam Sorkar, retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, former Joint Secretary Tahmida Ahmed, and retired Brigadier General Abul Fazl Md. Sanatullah.
Nasir Uddin’s name was one of the two suggested by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for the CEC position.
He has previously served as the Secretary of both the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Health.
Nasir Uddin retired from the civil service in January 2009 and was a member of the 1979 batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration).
The other name BNP had proposed for the CEC role was Shafiqul Islam. Earlier this month, the BNP submitted a list of candidates to the Search Committee, which included both Nasir Uddin and Shafiqul Islam.
Most of the BNP’s allied parties also supported these two names for the CEC
