Tourist drowns in Bandarban waterfall, two more missing

A tourist has drowned and two others went missing while bathing at a waterfall in Bandarban.

The incident was reported at Badurchhara waterfall in Rowangchhari upazila of the district on Friday (December 24).

The deceased was identified as Maria Islam (19), hails from Narayanganj while the missing tourists are Ahsan Akib (22) and Maria Binte Jahir (17) of the same district.

Members of law enforcement agencies and fire service and civil defence rushed to the spot to rescue the missing tourists.

Local sources said, a team of 10 tourists from Narayanganj went to visit the waterfall in an engine-powered boat at Sangu river in Taracha union of the upazila. Of them, seven were washed away while they went bathing at the falls. The team rescued five of them with the help of locals and took them to Bandarban Sadar hospital where physicians declared one dead.

“Five of the injured people were taken to the hospital. Among them, one died. Other four tourists are undergoing treatment in the hospital,” Dr Gunjan Chowdhury of the hospital told media.

Confirming the matter Officer in Charge (OC) of Rowangchhari police station, Abdul Mannan, said the rescue operation was still underway.
