Gaza’s reconstruction after the devastating conflict with Israel will require a staggering $530 billion, according to the latest report from the United Nations.
This revelation, made on Wednesday, was shared by the Turkish news agency Anadolu.
The UN’s findings reveal the severe damage caused by the 18-month-long war between Israel and Hamas.
The report estimates that $20 billion will be needed in the first three years alone to begin the recovery process.
To fully rebuild the war-torn region, the total cost will rise to approximately $530 billion.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke about the situation, noting, "Given the current circumstances, it has not been possible to conduct a complete assessment of Gaza`s needs.
Nevertheless, preliminary evaluations indicate that there is an immense need for large-scale recovery and rebuilding in the Gaza Strip."
The war, which began on October 7, 2023, between Israel and Hamas, has had devastating effects on the Palestinian people.
Over 48,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, with more than 12,000 still missing.
Over 100,000 people have been injured in the ongoing violence.
The UN also reported that Israeli airstrikes have displaced approximately 85% of Gaza’s Palestinian population, and nearly 60% of the region`s infrastructure has been either severely damaged or completely destroyed.
Although a ceasefire has been in place in Gaza since January 19, concerns are mounting that it may not last.
Both Israel and Hamas are accusing each other of failing to uphold the ceasefire agreement. In a worrying development, Hamas has suspended the release of hostages.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also threatened to resume military operations in Gaza if all hostages are not freed by Saturday.
This report highlights the immense challenges Gaza faces in rebuilding its devastated infrastructure, with the need for international assistance greater than ever.
