The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has said that his party would view China’s proposal on the Teesta River development project positively if they come to power in the future.
He made the remarks during a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Monday, following a recent visit by a BNP delegation to China.
During the visit, BNP explained Bangladesh’s needs regarding the Teesta River project to Chinese authorities, who reportedly responded with positive interest and expressed a willingness to move forward on the matter.
“We made it clear to them that if we form the government, we will treat their proposal very positively,” Fakhrul said.
He also highlighted that China has expressed its intention to work more deeply and sincerely with an elected government in Bangladesh.
“China hopes to build a stronger, friendlier, and more affectionate relationship with a government that comes through a democratic process,” he stated.
Addressing China’s role in the Rohingya repatriation crisis, Fakhrul noted that Beijing is actively and sincerely engaging with Myanmar to ensure the safe and early return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland.
On the question of whether BNP is trying to deepen its ties with China, Fakhrul responded that China values good relations among neighboring countries and is interested in maintaining balanced regional diplomacy.
He also confirmed that during meetings with senior Chinese leaders, the BNP delegation acknowledged China’s long-standing support in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development and urged for further cooperation in areas such as digital technology, semiconductors, renewable energy, healthcare, higher education, modern agriculture, SME development, and the blue economy. China reportedly responded positively to all of these proposals.
In his written statement, Fakhrul also revealed that BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has received an invitation from the Communist Party of China to visit the country.
Additionally, he affirmed BNP’s clear support for the "One China Policy," reinforcing the party’s stance on international alignment with Beijing.
