No indication of delay in February 2026 general election: Amir Khasru

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that there are no indications suggesting the national election scheduled for February 2026 will not take place.

On the contrary, preparations for the polls are visibly underway, he stated during a press briefing on Sunday at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.

The statement came following a meeting between the BNP leadership and Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh. The meeting was led by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

In response to a question about possible uncertainty over the February polls, Amir Khasru said, “I see no signs that the election won’t be held. Rather, I see preparations being made. The entire country is gearing up for it; the Election Commission is preparing. There’s no point in raising unnecessary doubts about something that hasn’t happened.”

He added, “People across the country are preparing for the election. Attempts to obstruct the upcoming election will serve no purpose.”

Addressing recent political developments, he criticized attempts to politicize the recent incident in Cumilla, stating, “A certain group is trying to use this incident to gain an advantage in the upcoming election. Problems cannot be solved through politicization—this will only worsen the situation. Such incidents are occurring across the country, and everyone knows who is behind them. Efforts to mislead the public through false narratives won’t succeed.”

He continued, “To exploit these events for political gain without resolving the underlying issues is unfortunate. The government needs to show more capability in dealing with this.”

Regarding the meeting with the Canadian High Commissioner, Amir Khasru said that discussions focused on the upcoming election—preparations by the government, political parties, and specifically BNP’s own readiness.

“They have expressed their willingness to support the election process and to work with the Election Commission,” he said.

The broader scope of Bangladesh–Canada relations was also discussed during the meeting, according to Khasru.

Earlier in the afternoon, Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh visited the BNP Chairperson’s office for a courtesy meeting with Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

BNP leaders Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Organizing Secretary Shama Obaed were also present during the meeting.
