JU student suspended over alleged offensive remarks about prophet

A student at Jahangirnagar University has been temporarily suspended following allegations of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media.

The university authorities have also formed an investigation committee to look into the incident.

According to an emergency notice issued on June 30 by the university’s Public Relations Office and signed by Acting Director Mohammad Mohiuddin, Taufiq Islam Nabil, a student of the Department of Geography and Environment from the 50th batch (academic year 2020–2021), has been suspended.

The decision was made by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan under Section 4(1)(b) of the Jahangirnagar University Code of Conduct for Students, 2018.

The suspension came in response to the student’s alleged violation of Section 295(a) of the Penal Code by hurting religious sentiments through his comments.

Alongside the suspension, an investigation committee has been formed in accordance with the same section of the ordinance. The committee is headed by Professor Shamsul Alam, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Efforts to contact the student via mobile phone were unsuccessful.

The controversy began when a screenshot of Nabil’s social media post surfaced on Saturday and quickly spread across platforms.

The post sparked outrage among students, leading to protests on campus that same night, where demonstrators demanded disciplinary action.

On Sunday, a group of students submitted a formal written complaint to the Vice-Chancellor, urging swift action and permanent expulsion of the student to maintain the university’s peaceful and inclusive environment.
