Members of the Dhaka University Journalists` Association staged a human chain on Saturday demanding a safe environment for journalism and justice over an alleged assault on reporters inside Shahbagh Police Station.
The protest was held at the foot of the Aparajeyo Bangla on the Dhaka University campus, drawing participation from current members as well as former leaders and senior journalists.
Speakers called for immediate identification of those involved in the incident, filing of cases and disciplinary action by the university administration.
Leaders and journalists from different organisations also joined in solidarity, raising concerns over the safety of media professionals.
Shahidul Islam, president of the Dhaka Union of Journalists, warned that suppressing journalism could undermine democratic values and urged authorities to ensure accountability.
Others criticised delays in taking legal action and alleged lack of response from law enforcement, saying justice must be ensured without further delay.
DUJA leaders also warned of a wider movement if their demands are not met.
The protest follows an incident on Thursday in which several journalists were reportedly assaulted by activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal inside the police station while performing their duties.
